“My kids enjoyed playing the Lego video games on our Xbox. As part of the game, you gather little coins that can be spent later on other characters or vehicles, etc. My youngest would ask, ‘Can we buy X?’ and I’d have him look at our balance. I’d ask him if we had enough. I’m not a huge proponent of lots of video games, but since we were playing it, I took the time to teach a lesson.

“My daughter loved to play ‘café,’ where she would prepare fake meals for us, bring out plates, and act as our waitress. At first, we just played along. Eventually, though, we took it a step further and had her create a menu, complete with pricing. When she was able, we’d ask her to add up the cost of everything we’d ordered for a grand total. After I’d grab my wallet and tell her to ‘run my card,’ we’d talk about the different types of cards and whether I was using my money or ‘someone else’s money’ to pay for the meal. Over months and months of playtime, we still got some lessons in there.”
